An absolutely adorable family showed up on my weekend morning shoot in Marketanpuisto. Two little girls, the 1-year old being the päivän sankari (hero of the day) and her 3-year old sister as a guardien and umbrella carrier. Girls were really sweet and parents were very modest people who don’t show it easily but are deeply in love. How moving were the moments when the love surfaced… But the morning was exceptionally windy and despite sun’s heroic efforts to warm us up, we were all really cold and the little misses were therefore very unhappy. We got some lovely shots, even though our selection of locations was greatly limited to walls shielding us from the wind. Nevertheless we decided to continue our adventure on some other day in a more children friendly weather.

Enjoy your preview, it was really nice meeting you. My favorite is the little punk shot, of course. :)

Amazing what life has in stock for us sometimes. I went to photograph a pregnant colleague of my husband, a doctor/scientist from Turkey. Her mum, who arrived for the birth from a small village outside of Istanbul, came along to the shoot. At the end, just as the sun was setting behind a small patch of moss, this amazing lady graciously allowed me to take a portrait of her. She looked at me and a miracle happened. The sky opened, the earth cracked, the moss became a fire and through her eyes I walked into her soul. It felt cozy being there, her soul reminding me of a grand kitchen full of people talking over each other, with a grandmother knitting small woollen animal toys in the corner and one of the dogs secretly steeling a piece of sausage from the table. Nobody got angry at him, even when they noticed. I didn’t want to come back to the real world, but someone had to press a shutter.

You have marked my heart and I will never forget you. You are beautiful.

And so winter came to Helsinki. Everything around is white and the air is pink and blue and the light, oh the light, so sweet … People smile again, after the autumn’s shades of grey, so many colors came at once. Sun shines. And the thermometer is well in the blue numbers. It warmed up around noon today, so me and my little ones decided to visit Ilmapallokeskus en route to our friends, who invited us over for some afternoon fun, play and piparit (gingerbread, pernicek) baking.

It was still -15 degrees Celsius when we spent about 40 minutes in Marketanpuisto. Boy, did we have fun. I am so glad to have finally captured the fun and playful spirit of my daughter. And in her new winter outfit too :) – which of course has to be of the princess color (read pink). Did I get frostbitten on my fingers? Of course. Did I try my new camera in less than favorable conditions? I did and it rocks! Did I realize again how much I love my daughter? Yes, I did, I love you so, my little darling girl…

Oh and I must not forget … This really never happens here in Finland, was it the weather or Xmas being so close, but in Ilmapallokeskus the ladies were so friendly, we got gifts and sweets from them and they chatted and laughed with us. You were like little indoor sunshines :) Thank you, lovely ladies!
